NY Yankes 6, Chicago White Sox 4

NEW YORK, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Ted Lilly pitched six innings in his first start since mid-August and Jorge Posada homered in his first game back from a five-game suspension as the Yankees posted a 6-4 victory Tuesday night over the Chicago White Sox.

Lilly earned his first win as a starter since July 5 in Baltimore by allowing four runs and six hits while striking out five and walking three in his first career start against the White Sox.

It was the second straight impressive outing for the young lefthander, who relieved an injured Andy Pettitte on Thursday against Tampa Bay and limited the Devil Rays to just one run over 7 2/3 innings.

Lilly, on the mound to start a game for the first time since August 18, received support from a trio of relievers over the final three frames. Closer Mariano Rivera, who had not pitched since Wednesday due to a right ankle injury, struck out the side in the ninth for his 48th save.

He also was helped by Posada, who had a solo homer, his 22nd of the season, in the fourth to forge a 3-3 tie.

After the White Sox went ahead on Magglio Ordonez's RBI single in the fifth, a run-scoring single by Bernie Williams tied it again and Posada delivered a sacrifice fly to put New York on top for good.

Posada had been serving a suspension for making contact with umpire Andy Fletcher on September 3 in Toronto.

Dan Wright (5-3), like Lilly facing the opposition for the first time, allowed five runs and eight hits over four innings. The righthander had won three straight over his previous four outings.
