SALIHORSK, Belarus, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Brazilian striker Nilton Mendes had a heart attack and died during practice with FC Shakhtyor Karagandy in Belarus at the age of 30.
Mendes died during a team workout Monday, team officials said Tuesday.
He had played in the central Asia region since 1999 and was player of the year with Irtysh in 2000. He was also player of the year when he led Superleague with 21 goals while playing for Astana in 2001.
Mendes collected 79 goals in 200 games with the three Superleague squads he played up for -- Irtysh, Astana, Shakhtyor.
He scored his first European competition goal this season in his team's first-round draw in the UEFA Intertoto Cup and had his final goal Aug. 4 while playing his against Astana.
The team planned to honor Mendes with a minute of silence before its game Wednesday.
