ROCKVILLE, Md., June 23 (UPI) -- U.S. company Lockheed Martin has been awarded a follow-on contract from the FBI to continue supporting the Card Scanning Service program.

Lockheed Martin says its Information Systems and Global Services unit was awarded the follow-on deal from the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services Division.

Under the $47 million contract, Lockheed Martin will continue to manage the Card Scanning Service program and its transition of the FBI's paper biometric records into digital records.

Officials say the Card Scanning Service program is part of an initiative by the FBI to establish a more complete and up-to-date criminal history record with modern access capabilities.

"We're proud to continue our decade-long partnership with the FBI on the Card Scanning Service program," Barbara Humpton, Lockheed Martin Information Systems and Global Services vice president, said in a statement.

"Having secure, accessible records is a vital element in the Bureau's ability to take quick and decisive actions for citizen safety. This new system will significantly improve how the FBI accesses traditional fingerprints as well as palm print and photo records."
