MUNICH, Germany, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- German defense officials have contracted Rohde & Schwarz for next-generation radio software development.

Munich-based Rohde & Schwarz was awarded the commission from the Federal Office for Information Management and Information Technology of the German armed forces, or Bundeswehr.

Under the deal, Rohde & Schwarz will develop software-defined radio technologies to support the German armed forces with advanced interoperable mobile communications capabilities for future Bundeswehr requirements.

"We look forward to making this project a reality in line with the needs of the Bundeswehr," Herbert Rewitzer, head of the Rohde & Schwarz radio communications systems division, said in a statement.

"We will use this opportunity to further enhance our capabilities and create highly skilled jobs in Germany."
