LYNCHBURG, Va., Feb. 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department has contracted Babcock & Wilcox to provide nuclear components for submarines and aircraft carriers.
Virginia-based nuclear components and services provider Babcock & Wilcox says its Nuclear Operations Group was awarded the contract. Under the more than $1 billion follow-on deal, Babcock & Wilcox will be expected to manufacture submarine and aircraft carrier nuclear power components.
Babcock & Wilcox previously was awarded an approximately $1.66 billion contract from the Defense Department. With the follow-on deal, Babcock & Wilcox officials say they plan to expand their operational capacity by adding an estimated 250 people to the company's workforce.
"We are extremely pleased with these new agreements and the continued growth of Babcock & Wilcox's nuclear business segments and product line," Brandon Bethards, Babcock & Wilcox chief executive officer, said in a statement.
"The Babcock & Wilcox team will continue to focus on providing a complete range of reliable, cost-effective and technologically advanced nuclear products as we help our clients meet today's needs, as well as those of the future."
