The DARPA solicitation is part of its Young Faculty Award program. Officials say the YFA is part of an initiative to identify and engage junior faculty and support them with high-impact funding for research to advance Defense Department needs.

DARPA is seeking proposals that could fund two years of research with up to $300,000 for "innovations that will enable revolutionary advances; high-risk/high-payoff ideas are strongly encouraged," the release said.

Research proposals are due by Feb. 16.
