CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. company General Dynamics has been contracted by Raytheon Missile Systems for the delivery of gun system technologies.
General Dynamics says its Armament and Technical Products unit was contracted to support Raytheon's production of the Phalanx Block 1B Close-In-Weapon System and the Centurion Land-Based Phalanx CIWS variant. Under the $18 million deal, General Dynamics will manufacture and deliver its gun systems for integration with the Phalanx and Centurion.
The Phalanx CIWS provides naval ships with an autonomous, radar-directed, Gatling-gun technology that enables rapid fire against enemy threats. Officials say the Centurion configuration of the Phalanx CIWS can be mounted on wheeled military vehicles.
"The Phalanx is the only deployed close-in-weapon system capable of searching, tracking and engaging littoral warfare threats," Jo Ann Kramer, General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products senior program manager of gun systems, said in a statement.
