CUPERTINO, Calif., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- An Apple official said this week that the Apple Watch won't be released to the public until spring 2015, quashing hopes consumers had for a winter release.

The new technology was announced in Apple's big unveiling in September along with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the time that the device would be "available early next year," leading some to believe it might be in stores just after the holidays.

Not so, says Apple Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores Angela Ahrendts.

In a video message to retail employees, she said the Apple Watch is anticipated to be available for purchase in the spring.

"We're going into the holidays, we'll go into Chinese New Year, and then we've got a new watch launch coming in the spring," she said.

In 2015, spring lasts from March 21 to June 20, so it's feasible customers won't see the Apple Watch until it's nearly summer.
