DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, June 24 (UPI) -- Cyberattacks targeting the oil and natural gas sector in Saudi Arabia and Qatar did not have much of an impact, computer analysts said.
Cyberactivist group Anonymous last week launched attacks on the energy sectors of major Middle East producers in an operation dubbed #OpPetrol.
Bulent Teksoz, a security strategist at computer security company Symantec, told Gulf News the operation had little impact. He said cyberattacks began last week.
"[Anonymous] did attack on June 20 but no major breaches or attacks so far," he said in an interview published Sunday. "A couple of Web pages and networks were attacked."
An unidentified security expert added the attack hit its intended target, but there were no indications of major problems on computer networks tied to the energy sector.
The state-owned Saudi Arabian Oil Co. in December said a cyberattack targeted its oil production services though there were no reported disruptions
Cybersecurity company Trend Micro said last week more than 100,000 Facebook accounts, 35,000 email accounts and 1,000 websites were compromised since Anonymous announced plans last month to launch #OpPetrol. The company said "the attacks did not seem to get much traction."
