HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Hollywood awarded visual-effects master Douglas Trumbull an Oscar for a lifetime of work on films like "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Blade Runner."
He received his Oscar at the Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Saturday night.
Trumbull had also been honored earlier in the week with the Georges Melies award at the Visual Effect Society's celebration.
"This is really a nice honor," Trumbull told The Hollywood Reporter at the VES after receiving the award. "There's a nice buzz amongst my peer professionals who have recognized that the thing I'm trying to do is actually important."
Trumbull was just 25 when he worked with Stanley Kubrick on 1968's "2011: A Space Odyssey," pioneering special-effects techniques filmmakers still use today.
His other films include "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."
Trumbull said "2001: A Space Odyssey" is the film he's most proud of, calling it "a complete, standout, unique, one-of-a-kind movie, that broke all of the rules, and it was very successful, and it's a classic movie."
