HOUSTON, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Federal Regulatory Commission approved construction for the first-ever carbon-neutral natural gas pipeline in the U.S. northwest, a company said.
The Ruby pipeline will stretch 678 miles from southwest Wyoming to markets in Nevada, California, Oregon and Washington.
Jim Cleary, president of the pipeline division at energy company El Paso Corp., lauded the economic and energy benefits of his company's pipeline.
"This approval is a milestone, successfully culminating more than two and one half years of outreach and comprehensive permitting at the federal, state and local levels," he said.
The pipeline has a designed capacity of 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day.
The company said the Ruby pipeline is the first ever carbon-neutral natural gas pipeline.
