ANKARA, Turkey, May 27 (UPI) -- The Turkish government remains hopeful that the nuclear deal it brokered in conjunction with Brazil over Iran's nuclear program will be accepted.
Hurriyet reported Thursday that Foreign Ministry spokesman Burak Ozugergin observed of U.S. criticism of the Turkish-Brazilian brokered deal in favor of further sanctions, "But it is a step forward on resolving the swap issue, which is one of the important elements of the nuclear file. It is true the glass is half empty ... but we say further action should be taken to fill it. It is unreasonable to reject the deal, saying the glass is half empty."
Ankara's and Brazilia's successful diplomatic peace initiative surprised Washington, which has been attempting to drum up support in the U.N. Security Council for an increased round of sanctions against Iran for its uranium enrichment program.
Complicating the issue, both Brazil and Turkey are currently non-permanent members of the Security Council as well.
