Iran touts Brazilian energy deal

TEHRAN, May 19 (UPI) -- Iran and Brazil agreed to form a joint energy committee that would meet every six months, the Iranian Oil Ministry announced.

Iranian Oil Minister Masoud Mir Kazemi met with Harold Lima, director of the National Oil and Gas Agency of Brazil, in Tehran to discuss bilateral energy initiatives.

Iranian officials during the meeting said they would offer Brazilians a role in liquefied natural gas projects in Iran. Both sides established a joint energy committee following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Tehran, the Iranian Oil Ministry's Petroenergy Information Network reports.

The energy deal comes as Brazilian and Turkish officials reached a compromise agreement with Iran on a nuclear fuel deal.

Iran under the deal would ship low enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for fuel for research reactors in Iran.

Washington welcomed the sincerity of the proposal but said it had unanswered questions regarding the Iranian nuclear program.

The MOU was signed during a weekend economic summit in Tehran.
