(UPI) -- Cellphone and tablet users in Africa will be able to charge their devices on-the-go with a new hydrogen cell powered charger called Upp.

The device, launched by power technology company Intelligent Energy, can deliver up to a week of charge to portable devices and is as fast as using a plug-in charger.

The Upp fuel cell takes hydrogen provided by the replaceable fuel cartridge and combines it with air to produce clean electricity, releasing only water vapor as a by-product.

It also comes with an auto-shutoff feature that conserves energy and protects the battery life of the device it's charging. Users can download an app to see usage statistics and battery capability.

"Upp is evidence that fuel cells are not just rocket science; the Upp fuel cell personal energy device has the power to extend your everyday life experiences and untether you from the wall socket, while making sure you stay connected,” said Intelligent Energy CEO Henri Winand.

The company is launching the product in sub-Sahran Africa, a rapidly growing market where subscriptions have risen to 475 million from 90 million seven years ago.
