Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A magnitude 4 earthquake was detected in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida late Wednesday in an area that rarely experiences significant seismic activity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at about 10:48 p.m. EST about 100 miles east of Cape Canaveral and at a depth of about 6.2 miles, according to the agency.

High-magnitude earthquakes are uncommon in the area off Florida's Atlantic coast where Wednesday's earthquake was detected.

The Miami Herald reports that more than 100 people reported that they felt shaking from the temblor.

"Earthquakes are not common in or offshore of Florida, but neither are they unheard of," the USGS posted to X Thursday.

The agency also said that Florida and North Dakota have the fewest number of earthquakes in the United States.
