Jan. 17 (UPI) -- It snowed in the desert -- again. And NASA has the proof.

A new NASA satellite image, shared by the space agency on Wednesday, showcases snow-capped dessert dunes near the town of Aïn Séfra in northern Algerian.

Situated between the Sahara and the Atlas Mountains, the town of just 35,000 people is sometimes referred to as "The Gateway to the Desert."

The snow fell earlier this month at desert elevations above roughly 3,200 feet. Between 4 and 12 inches of snow accumulated. It's the second time in three years that snow has dusted Algerian dunes.

Until snow fell on Aïn Séfra last winter, the Algerian city hadn't seen frozen precipitation in 40 years.
