Google honors physicist Max Born with new Doodle

Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Google is celebrating what would have been the 135th birthday of German physicist and mathematician Max Born with a new Doodle.

Google's homepage features a drawing of Born thinking hard while pouring over multiple textbooks and equations.

Born is best known for earning the Nobel Prize in 1954 for creating the Born Rule, "a quantum theory that uses mathematical probability to predict the location of wave particles in a quantum system."

"Previous theories proposed that wave equations were exact measurements, involving cumbersome physical measurement experiments. A gifted mathematician, Born discovered that matrices or 'arrays of numbers by rows and columns' could yield a similar result, relying on predictions of probability. This revolutionary theory now provides the basis for practically all quantum physics predictions," Google said of Born's discovery.

The theory is said to have revolutionized the basis of quantum mechanics predictions which in the past has led to the invention of computers, lasers and medical imaging devices among other technologies.

Born died in 1970 at the age of 87.
