Google honors scientist Eva Ekeblad with new Doodle

July 10 (UPI) -- Google is celebrating what would have been the 293rd birthday of Swedish countess, scientist and agronomist Eva Ekeblad with a new Doodle.

Born in the 18th century, Ekeblad helped reduce famine in her country for years through her studies with the potato.

Google's homepage features a wooden plank spelling out the company's name with a potato slice next to a pile of flour.

"Eva discovered the starch was humble but mighty - potatoes could be ground into flour or distilled into spirits," Google wrote of her groundbreaking discovery.

"For her scientific and delicious work, Eva Ekeblad became the first woman elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1748. She was truly a pioneer - the next woman recognized in those ranks would come 203 years later," Google continued.

Ekeblad also discovered a way to bleach cotton textile and yarn with soap in 1751.
