SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Japan's Sony says more than 1 million of its PlayStation 4 videogame consoles were snapped up by customers on its first day of sale.

Gamers appeared to be impressed with the device, Andrew House, head of the Japanese tech giant's videogame division, said.

"Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America," he said in a statement reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Sony said it was looking at a sales goal of 5 million units by March, which would surpass the 3.5 million sales the previous PlayStation 3 racked up in the same introductory time frame.

Sony's lineup of games at the launch of the $400 PlayStation 4 includes "Killzone," "Shadow Fall," "Knack" and "Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag."

Buyers will also find the console offering entertainment options including Amazon Instant Video, Netflix and Hulu Plus.
