Chinese astronaut delivers school lecture from space

BEIJING, June 20 (UPI) -- China's second female astronaut has given the country's first-ever video lecture from space, speaking to students about physics in zero-gravity, officials said.

Delivering the lecture from the Tiangong-1 space laboratory, where the Shenzhou spacecraft is currently docked, Wang Yaping used spinning tops, a ball and water to demonstrate the concepts of weight and mass in space, China's state-run Xinhua hews agency reported Thursday.

Around 330 primary and secondary school students watched the lecture on a live two-way video feed to a special classroom in Beijing that allowed them to ask Wang questions.

An estimated 60 million additional students and teachers around China were expected to watch the lecture live, the Ministry of Education said.

Wang and her fellow astronauts were launched in their Shenzhou-10 spacecraft June 11 and the spacecraft docked with the Tiangong-1 on June 13, in a mission expected to last until June 25.

Wang, 33, is the second Chinese female astronaut after Liu Yang, who was a member of the Shenzhou-9 mission crew in June 2012.
