Combat dogs in Israel get their own serial number, personnel file

TEL AVIV, Israel, May 17 (UPI) -- Israel says military dogs are getting their own personnel files with serial numbers, medical backgrounds, performance reports and photos.

Dogs of the Oketz canine special forces unit have received a military serial number which the army will use to track their activities, Ynetnews reported Friday.

Each dog has also been given a personnel file that contains information from the moment it joined the unit, military officials said.

The file will allow a unit member to know everything about their canine companion, including where it was born, training it has undergone, previous operations it has been involved in and any special accreditation earned.

"This is a unit with special needs and characteristics," Lieutenant Colonel Eran Shor of the Computer Services Directorate of the Ground Forces said. "The dogs are spread out over several fronts along the northern border, in the territories and on the Gaza border. This information will provide commanders with an up-to-date picture."

The files will also include medical background such as current state of health, types of immunizations received, and treatments the dog has had throughout its service, information that will allow the dogs to be tracked and given appropriate healthcare.
