$1.5 million fine for pirating movies

WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- A Virginia man must pay $1.5 million in damages to an adult entertainment company for illegally sharing 10 of its movies on the Internet, a court has ruled.

Kywan Fisher, of Hampton, has been ordered to pay the damages to Flava Works for sharing 10 of its movies on the BitTorrent site, TorrentFreak reported Friday.

Flava Works sued Fisher and several others in 2011 in a case that differed from so-called John Doe lawsuits because Flava Works had detailed information on the defendants who had paid accounts on the company's movie portal.

Instead of just viewing the films for personal entertainment, Fisher allegedly went on to share copies on the BitTorrent site, Flava Works charged.

Codes embedded in the videos allowed the illegal activity to be traced back to Fisher's Flava Works account.

The user agreement Fisher signed with Flava Works expressly forbids copying films, allowing Flava to claim willful copyright infringement.
