Space shuttle on the road to new LA home

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- The space shuttle Endeavour left the Los Angeles International Airport early Friday and is now on city streets heading for its new museum home, officials said.

The shuttle, rolling on its giant transporter at less then 2 mph, left the airport at 2 a.m. PDT, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Right on time, it just cleared the gates," airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said.

Scores of onlookers lined city streets as the shuttle began its walking-pace journey toward downtown and its new home at the California Science Center in Exposition Park.

Television trucks and camera crews arrayed themselves along the 12-mile route.

The 170,000-pound shuttle will require two days to make the journey from the airport to its eventual display location and should arrive at the science center by Saturday evening, officials said.
