Apple hits mark of 25 billion downloads

CUPERTINO, Calif., March 5 (UPI) -- Apple says its App Store has achieved a milestone with the downloading of 25 billion apps for iPhones, iPads and other devices.

A colorful banner of the technology giant's Web site said, "A billion thanks. 25 times over. The App Store has reached 25 billion downloads. Thanks for getting us there."

Apple has been conducting a Billion Apps Countdown Promotion since Feb. 13, the Los Angeles Times reported.

PC Magazine reported that Chunli Fu of Qingdao, a city in eastern China, downloaded a free version of Disney's physics-based puzzle game "Where's My Water?" as the 25-billionth download to win a $10,000 iTunes gift card.

Apple's App Store passed 15 billion downloaded apps in July 2011, while rival Google announced in December its Android Market had passed 10 billion downloads.

Apple's presence in China has exploded, with its earning there going from zero to $13 billion in just the last few years, the Times reported.
