LAS VEGAS, Calif., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The number of Android phones activated every day is more than twice that of babies born, a YouTube executive said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Robert Kyncl, YouTube's head of content, told a CES audience 700,000 Android handsets were activated every day in December. The United Nations says statistics suggest around 300,000 babies are born worldwide every day, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported.
Google, creator of the Android OS for smartphones, would have to seek new customers on other planets, Kyncl joked.
Activations are likely to remain high for some time as multiple manufacturers introduced Android phones and Android-powered tablet computers at the 2012 CES.
Microsoft and Nokia are trying to offer competition to Google's Android operating system with a range of phones powered by Windows Phone 7, while Apple continues to sell iPhones with its iOS in huge numbers.
