Conn. reports more mountain lion sightings

GREENWICH, Conn., June 13 (UPI) -- The day after a mountain lion was killed by a car near Milford, Conn., two new sightings were reported in Greenwich, state officials said.

Department of Environmental Protection officials said that even though there is no evidence such as photographs or contact with people or animals to suggest more than one mountain lion is roaming Connecticut, the department is investigating the sightings, The Hartford Courant reported Sunday.

"We are not yet aware that there is any new or fresh evidence indicating the presence of a mountain lion in Greenwich," department spokesman Dennis Schain said. "So we do continue to believe the animal hit in Milford was the animal seen in Greenwich last week [on June 5]. But we do take these reports seriously and we are working with Greenwich police to follow up and investigate."

Schain said one sighting was reported to the state department and the other to the Greenwich police department.

Despite a number of reported sightings over the years, the department said Connecticut doesn't have native mountain lions, the Courant said.

Department officials said they think the animal spotted June 5 likely was in captivity and either was released or escaped.
