Poll: Britons still support nuclear power

LONDON, March 22 (UPI) -- More Britons still support the building of new nuclear power plants than oppose it despite the recent nuclear disaster in Japan, a poll indicates.

However, the survey, commissioned by Friends of the Earth, found that a week after Japan's crisis began, opinion on U.K. nuclear plans has altered somewhat, the BBC reported Tuesday.

After the crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant, 35 percent of those polled said they support a plan to replace existing U.K. reactors, with 28 percent opposed.

In a poll taken in November, the figures were 47 percent in favor of new nuclear plant construction, with 19 percent opposed.

Following the Fukushima crisis, U.K. ministers have said the United Kingdom must "learn the lessons," with Energy Secretary Chris Huhne calling for a safety review of British installations.

In a separate poll last year 60 percent of Britons said they would oppose the building of either a nuclear or coal-fired power station in their particular neighborhood, but 73 percent would support the construction of a wind farm.
