EPA sets testing rules for chemicals

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced health and environmental testing requirements for 19 high production volume chemicals.

Under the Toxic Substances Control Act, manufacturers of the high production chemicals will have to test the chemicals and submit the data to the agency, an EPA release said Tuesday.

"This chemical data reporting will provide EPA with critical information to better evaluate any potential risks from these chemicals that are being produced in large quantities in this country," Steve Owens of the EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention said.

Many of the chemicals on the list have consumer and industrial applications, and are found in personal care products, dyes and metalworking fluids.

The rule follows up on the voluntary HPV Challenge Program Chemical List created by EPA that included chemicals used in household products such as hobby/craft glues, personal care products, home cleaning products, home maintenance products, and automotive products.

Under the challenge program, companies voluntarily supplied data on more than 2,200 high production volume chemicals.

However, no health and environmental effects data was provided on the 19 chemicals in the EPA rule, making it necessary for the agency to require testing, its release said.
