BETHESDA, Md., June 22 (UPI) -- U.S. medical scientists say they've discovered increasing certain proteins in the blood vessels of mice lowered the animals' blood pressure.
The researchers -- led by Dr. Darryl Zeldin, acting clinical director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences -- said their finding provides new avenues for research that may lead to new treatments for hypertension.
"The paper demonstrates that (the protein) cytochrome P450 plays an important role in the management of high blood pressure, a disease of enormous public health concern," Zeldin said.
The study, which included Assistant Professor Craig Lee of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and researchers from the Medical College of Wisconsin and Oregon Health and Science University, appears in the early, online edition of the FASEB Journal.
