CLEVELAND, April 12 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists said they've found molecular targets for diabetes-related erectile dysfunction -- a condition affecting up to 75 percent of male diabetics.
Researchers at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York said they have identified some of the molecular changes that accompany the onset of diabetes-induced ED, which may lead to markers that will help identify ED risk, as well as new potential drug targets.
Case Western Professor Mark Chance, the study's corresponding author, said he and his colleagues used a proteomics approach to examine the relative abundance of proteins in the corpora -- the expandable tissues along the length of the penis that fill with blood during erection -- of diabetic rats at two different stages of progression: one week and two months after the onset of diabetes. By comparing the rats to healthy age-matched controls, they identified 57 proteins in the penile tissue that either increased or decreased during diabetes.
They said their findings might lead to diagnostic and drug targets.
The study that included researcher Elizabeth Yohannes at Case Western and Assistant Professors Jinsook Chang, Moses Ta, and Kelvin Davies at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University appears in the March issue of the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics.
