PALM HARBOR, Fla., April 21 (UPI) -- The parents of a 12-year-old boy who shot himself with a handgun he found in their home told police they had forgotten they even owned the gun.
The boy, Jacob Larson, was found last Friday with a gunshot wound to the head. He remains hospitalized, the St. Petersburg Times (Fla.) reported. The shooting was being investigated as an accidental discharge.
Jacob's mother and stepfather said they had forgotten they had placed a small .25-caliber handgun in a box in the closet. His mother said the gun was given to her by an employer years ago and she had never fired it.
