UPPSALA, Sweden, June 24 (UPI) -- A Swedish-led international research team has described for the first time how hydrogen atoms are stored and released by compounds containing magnesium.
The researchers said they expect their findings will aid scientists in building hydrogen fuel cells having sufficient power to compete effectively with internal combustion engines.
Professor Rajeev Ahuja of Uppsala University led the research designed to create computer simulations of magnesium clusters at the quantum mechanical level. The simulations were performed at Uppsala University's Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science.
Ahuja said the simulations demonstrated how tiny amount of catalysts lead to the rapid storage and release of hydrogen atoms that is crucial for the production of efficient and cost-effective hydrogen fuel cells.
"We expect the findings to aid further technical improvements of magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials, as well as other related light metal hydrides," said Ahuja.
The study appears in the early online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
