Woman dies of flesh-eating disease

LA LOCHE, Saskatchewan, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Medical investigators in Saskatchewan, Canada, are trying to determine if a woman's death from flesh-eating bacteria is related to a rise in pneumonia.

Jean Mongrand died last week in La Loche in the northern part of the province, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. In her case, the source of the disease was the pneumococcus bacteria.

Necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating disease, is an unusual infection that destroys skin and tissue. About a dozen people in La Loche who had contact with Mongrand are being given precautionary antibiotics.
