Dengue fever claims more lives in India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- The dengue fever outbreak in India worsened Saturday, with 19 deaths reported in New Delhi alone.

Even the family of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been touched by the disease. His son-in-law and two grandsons were hospitalized with symptoms of the mosquito-borne illness, the Press Trust of India said.

The disease has appeared in most of the country, and there have also been complaints that hospitals and government health agencies have not been responding properly.

In Chandigarh, outpatient departments in many hospitals were closed for the weekend because of a two-day holiday, Express News said. In the state of Bihar, the Times of India reported, there are no facilities for testing patients for the disease in state hospitals.

Dengue fever, a tropical disease first described in the late 18th century, is a viral infection with symptoms that can range from mild to fatal.
