BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 28 (UPI) -- Network giant Cisco Systems' Chief Executive Officer John Chambers is scheduled to arrive in Azerbaijan Thursday, the country's Trend news agency said.

Chambers will meet with President Ilham Aliyev, Minister of Economic Development Heydar Babayev, Minister of Communication and Information Technology Ali Abbasov and IT industry executives, according to the report.

This is not Cisco's first contact with the central Asian country. Vice President Robert Agie recently signed an agreement with the country's Education Minister Misir Mardanov, the report said.

"The company officials suggest this visit will positively influence Cisco Systems' operations in Azerbaijan," the news agency reported.

Azerbaijan has recently taken on the task of a quick modernization after independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. The country is working to develop and exploit its natural resources, which according to Azerbaijani officials and the executives of foreign energy companies operating there, include vast Caspian Sea oil and natural-gas fields.
