DAMASCUS, Syria, June 22 (UPI) -- Third-generation mobile services, including video calls and high-speed Internet, will soon be offered in Syria, a Syrian telecom company announced Wednesday.
"Investcom is committed to investing in the future of 3G technology and, through our Areeba Syria operations, we are confident that the country can benefit from this technology," Azmi Mikati, Investcom's chief executive officer, said via an Areeba company statement.
Investcom is an international provider of mobile telecommunications services, and Areeba is the company's cellular brand name in Syria.
"The high-speed Internet service ... (boasts speeds of) up to 340 kilobits per second," the company statement said. "The Internet can be accessed via the mobile handset, a PC or laptop connected to a 3G phone or a 3G card equipped with a 3G line," the company continued.
Cellular networks and phones first hit Syria in 1999, but only in Damascus. Internet arrived soon after.
