Pledge requirement for AIDS grant rejected

NEW YORK, May 10 (UPI) -- A U.S. court decision will allow two health charities to qualify for government AIDS grants without having to pledge their opposition to prostitution.

The federal court in New York is expected to issue a preliminary injunction preventing the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Department of Health and Human Services from imposing the pledge requirement, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The decision is a victory for Alliance for Open Society International and Pathfinder International, groups that support "social reform" and "reproductive rights." They are funded by financier George Soros, who supports a series of liberal causes.

The groups and other plaintiffs had maintained the pledge impinged upon their right to free speech by requiring them to endorse a political position, the Journal reported.
