WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Fuel economy figures for 2006 model vehicles were announced Wednesday by the U.S. EPA and Department of Energy in Washington.
Hybrid and diesel vehicles continued to lead the government's fuel economy ratings, with the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius hybrids, along with Volkswagen's new Beetle and Golf diesels, topping the list.
Several hybrid SUVs were also ranked in the top 10, including the Lexus RX 400h, Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda Tribute Hybrid, Mercury Mariner Hybrid and Toyota Highlander Hybrid.
One conventional gasoline-fueled vehicle made the 2006 top 10 -- the Toyota Corolla with manual transmission, which was rated at 30 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.
The best fuel economy was achieved by the two-seater Honda Insight with manual transmission. That automobile was rated at 60 mpg in cities and 66 mpg in highway driving. The mid-sized Toyota Prius hybrid was rated at 60/51 mpg.
