Ambassador shows anti-smog technology

MEXICO CITY, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza Monday helped demonstrate new anti-pollution technology for Mexico City's bus system.

The filter device applied to the exhaust pipe, developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, reduces particulate pollution in diesel engines by 90 percent.

"By retrofitting public transit buses, we can apply cutting-edge U.S. technology to pollution reduction," Garza told reporters at a city bus depot. "It means 90 percent less pollution and that benefits 100 percent of the people living in this great city."

EPA Administrator Michael Leavitt kicked off the pilot program for Mexico City public transport buses in June 2004. The U.S. government provided $350,000 while the Washington-based World Resources Institute's Center for Sustainable Transportation contributed $150,000 for the project.
