Really 'cool suit' under development

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists are developing a "cool suit" that would benefit firefighters and even Disney mascots by keeping them cool in extreme heat.

Lead developer James Klett at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee said the integrated cooling system is centered on a cartridge made from zeolite, a porous material, and water. As the water is exposed to the zeolite under vacuum, the water evaporates and condenses on the zeolite.

The suit incorporates biometric feedback of the core body temperature to maximize cooling yet prevent chilling. The system allows for continuous operation, as the cartridge, which operates for 30 to 45 minutes, is easily changed.

Klett said the system also is designed to remove sweat, which is a prime hazard as sweat buildup can produce flash steam and severe burns to firefighters.

The laboratory is partnered on the project with the U.S. Navy's Navair Research Center in Patuxent River, Md.
