Dead zone forming off Oregon coast

CORVALLIS, Ore., Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Dissolved oxygen levels at 40-year lows off the coast of Oregon have scientists baffled, but researchers say they may reflect a change in ocean circulation.

For the second time in three years, the ocean "dead zone" is killing fish, crabs and other marine life. However, during 2002, the dead zone appeared to be a one-time anomaly, an odd combination of climate, winds and upwelling patterns.

"When you see the same thing happening with this regularity, it suggests something is fundamentally different," said Jane Lubchenco, of Oregon State University.

Added Lubchenco: "This is a significant departure from normal conditions and you have to wonder what's going on. This ocean system has changed, and we're paying attention."
