Top Welsh inline skater dies after crash

CARDIFF, Wales, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Richard Taylor, Britain's in-line skating and freestyle skiing champion, has died after colliding with a lamppost near his home in Wales.

The BBC reported Taylor died Sunday in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

His family said they hope to donate his organs to help others.

"He strongly supported organ donation and his family are responding to his wishes for his organs to be donated and hope that his passing away will be of benefit to others," said a hospital spokesman.

Taylor, who turned profession at age 15, won the U.K. National In-Line skating championships for the second consecutive year last month. However, he had been recovering from a knee injury and it's believed the injury might have contributed to his fatal accident.

His father, Josh Taylor, said at the time of the crash Taylor was not wearing a helmet and that the use of safety equipment was bone of contention between them.
