South American lake to be 'cleaned'

LIMA, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- The Peruvian government is planning to decontaminate Lake Titicaca, South America's largest lake, EFE reported.

Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake at 12,530 feet, has had it oxygen levels of the inner bay drop to dangerously low levels because of pollution.

The head of tourist development at the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Jorge Chavez, told the Spanish news agency that the Peruvian government needs $37 million to begin cleaning up the world-famous lake located on the Peruvian-Bolivian border.

Chavez said the removal of thousands of cubic meters of sludge and algae will begin early next year and that programs to prevent sewage from nearby localities from entering the lake were already underway.
