Hospital sued for wrong eye surgery

NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- A 67-year-old grandmother is suing New York's Flushing Hospital and one of its doctors, alleging the doctor operated on the wrong eye.

Maria Rodriguez of Astoria, whose suit names Dr. Pauline Lask in addition to the hospital, says she was admitted May 9, 2002, for a corneal transplant on her left eye, the New York Post reports.

Rodriguez says when she woke up she found her healthy right eye was covered with bandages.

"I screamed and called for a nurse," she said. "The doctor came and said I was not to worry, that she would arrange to do the other eye next week. I said, 'No way!'"

She said her right eye was so badly damaged, she can't read or walk without dizziness.

There was no immediate comment from Flushing Hospital.
