LONDON, June 11 (UPI) -- British archeologists may have found the mummy of Queen Nefertiti -- one of the most powerful women of ancient Egypt.
The mummy was discovered in a tomb in 1898 in the Valley of the Kings. But the Sunday Times of London says the determination the mummy is Nefertiti came only after Egypt allowed the 3,500-year-old relic to be examined in detail for the first time.
Joann Fletcher, a researcher from York University, told the newspaper archeologists found a broken-off arm, bent in a manner that was permitted only if the dead person was a pharaoh or queen.
Fletcher says the mummy is certainly that of a royal woman of the late 18th dynasty who wielded tremendous power. She said there aren't many who fit that description, but added: "We can never have cast-iron certainty that it is Nefertiti, but we have narrowed it right down."
The name Nefertiti means "a beautiful woman has come".
