Tiny silicon grains for lasers on a chip

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Newly developed silicon grains that emit laser light may in future serve as the backbone of an optical computer network light years faster than today's Internet. The microscopic particles are nanometers -- or billionths of a meter -- in size, and glow red laser light.
