School struggling with racist video

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- A Florida high school principal says officials there are still trying to determine how to deal with two students who made racist comments in an online video.

Officials at Santaluces High School in Lantana learned late Monday that the girls in the 4-minute video were students, the Palm Beach Post reported.

"It's groundbreaking territory," Kathleen Orloff, the school principal, said.

Vickie Middlebrooks, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County school district, said "appropriate action" will be taken.

"Racist comments are unacceptable and have no place in our school district," Middlebrooks said in a statement.

In the video, the two teenagers chat as one of them brushes her hair. They complain about hair weaves and say that Santaluces students "start turning black" when they enter school premises. About 27 percent of the students are white, 35 percent black and 33 percent Hispanic.

At the end of the video, the girls say "Peace and love" and make the peace sign.

Orloff said she sent a robo-call message to parents urging them to use the incident as a "teachable moment" for their children.

Santaluces High gained national attention earlier this month when a 15-year-old student was charged with killing a 16-year-old in a fight over a bicycle.
