Runaway tire kills man in Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., April 11 (UPI) -- A 47-year-old man has died in Palm Beach County, Fla., four days after he was struck down in a freak accident by a tire that flew off a car.

Authorities told the Palm Beach Post that William Corum was stuck last Wednesday by the runaway tire, which was likely traveling at almost 60 mph after it came off a car and traveled 1,000 feet before hitting Corum.

The owner of a construction equipment business was knocked unconscious by the impact and died on Easter Sunday from his injuries.

Corum's two children, ages 12 and 14, were not informed of their father's death until Monday to avoid spoiling their holiday.

His sister, Donna Cheatham, said the accident was simply an unfortunate freak occurrence.

"It's like a massive area and to have bee-lined right to him is just incredible," she said. "He could've been five inches one way or the other, and it would've missed him."
