EASTBOURNE, England, June 21 (UPI) -- American Chanda Rubin beat former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez of Spain Saturday to defend the Hastings Direct International Championships.
The second-seeded Rubin beat Martinez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in two hours, 16 minutes after the final of the grasscourt event was delayed for nearly three hours after a security alert.
An anonymous telephone threat forced the evacuation of 4,500 spectators at Devonshire Park, with bag searches required for all before re-entry into the grounds of this seaside venue.
Rubin defended a title for the first time in her 12-year professional career. She is just the third woman ever and first since Martina Navratilova in 1991 to win two straight titles at Eastbourne.
The 27-year-old American will play Iva Majoli of Croatia in the first round at Wimbledon, which begins Monday. Rubin has won two of her last three events.
