Rick Fox retires from NBA

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Rick Fox, a member of three Los Angeles Lakers championship teams, retired Thursday.

Fox played in the NBA 13 years, six with Boston and then seven with the Lakers. He was traded back to Boston in August but decided not to continue playing.

Injuries kept Fox out of the Lakers' lineup much of last season.

"He has been rehabbing diligently all summer in hopes of returning for the upcoming season," his spokeswoman said, "but unfortunately his body is simply not responding."

Fox has "several options to pursue" including acting, the spokeswoman said.

Fox has appeared in various TV series.

The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 930 games during his NBA career.

"We were aware of Rick's medical situation when we made the trade," said Danny Ainge, Celtics director of basketball operations. "He has been a true professional and will always be a member of the Celtics family, especially considering this is where he started his career."
